Nicosia

Northern Nicosia (Lefkosha)
It is the capital of Northern Cyprus, a pieceful city with the most beautiful monuments of Gothic and Ottoman architecture. The city was founded around the 7th century, soon after the destruction of Constantia in the east of the island. The impressing Gothic constructions related to the period when the island was owned by French knight Guy De Luzinian (1192) have remained here.

The historical centre of Northern Nicosia – Ataturk’s area in an old city. Main street Girne Caddesi conducts from the area, on the north to Kyrenia gates (in which now there is a tourist-information centre). To the east, from the area, quarter Selimiye (Selimiye) in which it is possible to find the basic sights of Northern Nicosia is located.

The mosque of Arab Ahmet-pasha – the most impressive Muslim temple in a city, a mosque has been constructed in 17 century in honour of the conqueror of Cyprus of Arab Ahmet-pasha. It is known for that hair is stored in it from a beard of the Prophet.
The house Dervisha-plough – now a small ethnographic museum. This house belonged to the Dervishu-pasha – to the publisher of the first Turkish newspaper on Cyprus “Zaman” (with 1891ã.). Now visitors of a museum can see interiors of a traditional bedroom, a drawing room, a room of the bride, a weaver’s workshop.

The main Turkish ethnographic museum – Mevlevi Tekke (Mevlevi Tekke), based in 1963, is placed in tekke sects dancing dervishes, powerful Muslim award Ìevlevi, and in this building dervishes executed the well-known dances. (Òekke is a Muslim analogue of a Christian monastery). In the beginning 20 century the sect has been forbidden by Kemal Ataturk. To museum expositions represents musical instruments, dancing suits dervishes, embroideries and metal wares.

The museum is adjoined by the mausoleum with 15 tombs in which are based dervishes, occupying supervising posts in tekke.

Cathedral building has begun in 1208ã., and have consecrated it 100 years later – in 1336ã. In a temple three altars turned towards Mecca are completed. Construction 16 century strong> Buyuk the Han (Buyuk Han) the big caravan-shed (a traditional Turkish inn) which consists of four two-storeyed buildings in which centre there is a small mosque very unusually looks. The stone and wooden inscriptions telling about building of library, are exhibits of the Museum of Library. The library roof has three domes, one of domes of especially large sizes. On the marble slabs which have been built in northern, southern and western walls of a building, it is possible to read the inscriptions meaning «Yes the god» will protect.

Bedesten To the south, from Mosque Selimiye, there is also other interesting monument of Gothic architectural art – church Bedesten. The house of Meetings Is to the southeast from Mosque Selimiye. This two-storeyed medieval building where Catholic priests gathered. A museum of National Struggle Museum Building has been begun in 1978. The museum building is subdivided into 4 sectors. The museum has been created on purpose perpetuate the memory, display and acquaintance of the future generations with conditions in which Turkish Cypriotes since 1955 till the present moment struggled.
MUSEUM Barbarian Date 1963 has become history on December, 24th of Turkish Cypriotes as a severe attack of Greeks on the Turks, proceeding three days and carried away lives of defenceless women, old men and children. Area Lefkosha – Êumsal has turned to a place, cool murders. Eyewitnesses of this evil deed, at the moment of an attack hard wounded have told to the world about happened on the night of December, 24th, 1963, later.
Historical fountains Lefkosha the Requirement for the water, many cities of Cyprus, has been satisfied only in Turkish Board on island. In Lefkosha, two most ancient sources of water, namely “Arab Ahmet” and “Silihtar the Pasha” are used and today. Also it is possible to list some more fountains constructed in Board of Turks on island.
