Peninsula Karpasia (Karpas)
Peninsula Karpasia (Karpas)
The long prominence of the peninsula stretches towards Syria for nearly 80 km, its width is very small, thus when driving along the peninsula, you can see both of its coasts at one and the same place. The peninsula is unique as there are unspoilt clean beaches, where sea turtles live and in the wild you can observe pretty Cyprian donkeys. It is worth mentioning that the road in this part of Northern Cyprus is quite complicated, it often goes up high in the mountains. And up there exceptional views open in front of your eyes. And in one of these places at a fairly high altitude in the mountains you can see a serious turnstile with a man sitting by it, who raises money in support of those Cyprian donkeys – just one Turkish lire per person.
In the eastern part of the peninsula, in fact, at the very edge of it, is the monastery of St. Andrew the Apostle. According to legend, he came to the same place where the Cyprus apostle Andrew came ashore, drink to thirst for all-out command ship. In his prayer, the lifeless part of the island there
source water from which not only quench the thirst of satellites Apostle Andrew, and healed from blindness boy, the son of the captain the ship. According to a legend, the captain has not forgotten about this miracle, and, returning, built over the source of the first church. And in the 18 century. Here was erected the monastery, high bell tower which served as both a beacon. The monastery was the most famous in Cyprus, the pilgrims come here by sea and arrived by land.

Now the monastery of St. Andrew the Apostle entered in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List, it is restored. Near the monastery is an excellent bazaar where locals sell items made by hand forged, woven blankets, embroidered scarves. Here, you can feel the true identity of Northern Cyprus – are absolutely no tourists (they are here only to travel), people live unhurried, this life.
Drive to the east of the monastery of St. Andrew is already on earth, not a tourist route to get the most eastern part of the island, at the very edge of it. Climb the mountain, where rise the flags of Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus – and around the boundless sea, and then somewhere far from Syria, Jordan …
