Famagusta is the largest seaport, located in the eastern part of the island. The most important period in the history of the city could be considered the reign of the Turks on the island. Thanks to the Turkish occupation in 1571 the island experienced the rise of the cultural and economic life. The Turks constructed traditional buildings, water channels, fountains; many Catholic churches were transformed into mosques, some of which have remained up to now.

Magnificent architectural monument is the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, which was transformed in the Turkish mosque (after the war, 1571g.), Has received the name of Lala Mustafa-Pasha.
